Kandy General Hospital undertook the first every heart transplant done in Sri Lanka. Much to everyone’s delight and certainly the patient’s, it was completed successfully.
The heart transplant was done for a 43 year old woman living in the Anuradhapura area. Director of the hospital Saman Ratnayake said that, a part of the woman’s heart was not functioning and a heart of a 24 year old brain dead youth was transplanted on her. The two kidneys of the youth have also been transplanted on two other patients. The woman who underwent heart transplant surgery and the other two underwent kidney transplant surgeries are undergoing treatment at the Kandy General Hospital. The Director of the hospital said that the patients are recovering well.
